Remain Safe on Foot: Safety Tips for Pedestrians

img5.jpegIf you live in a big city, such as Kansas City, there are many situations where the best mode of transportation is your own two feet. When you walk, you can avoid traffic, make as many stops as necessary without having to find parking and even enjoy saying "hello" to those you pass. Even if you are in a situation where commuting by foot isn't extremely efficient, it may still be how you choose to travel.

Regardless of why you are traveling by foot, you should understand that this is one of the most dangerous forms of transportation available. In fact, according to the National Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013 alone, 4,735 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers.

While crosswalks have been designed to provide safe walking conditions for those traveling by foot, it is still important to remember that many drivers just don't pay enough attention to the signals, lights, and signs ahead of them.

Tips for Keeping Pedestrians Safe

The good news is, there are some tips you can take as a pedestrian to ensure you remain safe while walking from one location to another. These include:

Don't ever step into a crosswalk if the hand has begun to flash.

Don't assume that the walkway is safe just because a driver signaled that you could walk.

Don't ever assume that a driver traveling toward you, sees you.

Look to the left, then look to the right, then look left once again to make sure the street is clear before you cross.

If there is a car approaching, make sure to make eye contact with the driver to ensure they see you before crossing.

Watch for bicyclists, too.

Don't trust that a driver is going to yield to you because you have the right of way according to the signal.

What to do if You are Injured in a Pedestrian Accident

If you or someone you love is injured while walking, and you believe the driver of the vehicle that struck them acted in a negligent manner, then you need to hire a personal injury attorney. If the driver is determined to be negligent, then you may be able to receive compensation for the injuries that you suffered.

Pedestrian accidents and the injuries that occur are often hard to prove. This is because there are a number of factors that may affect the situation. By hiring legal representation, you will have someone fighting for your rights to ensure you receive the monetary compensation you deserve. Keep in mind, some injuries that occur after being struck by a vehicle can be severe. You may not be able to return to work or your normal life. Recovering damages can help you restore as much normalcy as possible.
