How do you handle a vehicle recall?

You have had your current car for a few years and enjoy driving around Missouri. Unfortunately, you have just learned about a recall. What do you do?

Thankfully, AARP has laid most of the groundwork for you. Know what steps to take next to stay safe and protect your rights.

Read over the recall

Take a close look at the recall notice to understand what the issue is. Even if the problem is a seemingly minor one, you do not want to run the risk of putting yourself or others in danger. Find out if you need to take a specific action and how long you have to take it.

Find out if parts are available

Depending on the car manufacturer and the reason for the recall, replacement parts could be available right now at your local dealership. On the other hand, you may need to wait while the manufacturer produces the replacement parts. If there is any confusion, there is likely a number on the recall notice you can call. Reaching out to your local dealership may also provide you with the information you need to know.

Stay calm

You may worry about how you will get around while awaiting a replacement part or the manufacturer’s decision about how to handle the issue. One of the most important things to keep in mind when it comes to recalls is that the manufacturer often handles repairs and replacements. If you do have to arrange for alternate transportation in the meantime, see if your insurance provider or the manufacturer will cover the cost.
